Chordoma UK funds UCL Cancer Institute Biobank & chordoma Patient Co-ordinator… The search is on!

Position: Biobank Co-ordinator. Location:  UCL Cancer Institute, London Group/Unit Sarcoma biology and genetics. Grade: 7

Hours: Full Time  Salary: £33,686 – 40,716 (inclusive of LW) Closing date: Friday 12th February 2016 (or two weeks from advert going live)

Duties and Responsibilities. We are seeking an interactive, self-motivated and sympathetic individual who wishes to contribute to improving treatment for patients with chordoma, a rare bone cancer. The successful candidate will interact closely with patients in London and across the UK, and will be responsible for establishing a biobank and database, and building a UK medical network to benefit patients with chordoma. They will also be involved in using databases / excel file and document management systems for tracking information about patients and their samples.

Professor Flanagan at UCL and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital has over 10 years experience in biobanking and research on chordoma and other bone tumours. The research has been extremely successful and has led to new classification of bone tumours and to new ways to stratify patients for targeted therapy.

The post is funded by Chordoma UK. The appointment is for immediate start and is funded for 2 years (with the possibility of this being extended subject to availability of research funding).

Key Requirements. Applicants must be educated to degree level (or equivalent). The individual should have good knowledge of patient confidentiality, the Data Protection Act and Human Tissue Act legislation and research regulations. The post holder should ideally have experience in obtaining informed consent from patients and of taking samples from patients.  S/he should have excellent IT skills and experience of using tissue storage databases would be beneficial.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, good attention to detail, high level of consideration for patients and a commitment to research quality are also required. The post holder will be based at the UCL Cancer Institute and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore (up to 50% of the time): travelling to specialist hospitals in the UK where patients are treated for this rare disease is also a requirement.
