New Research Funded to Test Recurrences

Exciting news on the research front! We agreed to fund a research project led by Professor Adrienne Flanagan to find out if a simple blood test can show whether chordoma has come back after surgery. For patients, that could mean finding out and acting sooner, and with less waiting and worry.

For the last ten years, Chordoma UK has paid to collect blood samples from more than 100 patients. The disease is so rare that those samples are very hard to replace, so the researchers waited until the technology was good enough to use them properly, and now is the right time.

The best part of being on a small team is how quickly we can decide. We read the proposal, asked the researchers & clinicians our questions and made the decision together in a few days, with no layers of sign-off.

All of the nearly £50,000 for this research came from our community: school cake sales (they really do add up), London Marathon runners, friends, families and companies that matched donations. Dr. Flanagan is Professor of Musculoskeletal Pathology at the University College London and Clinical Lead and consultant histopathologist at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore. She's also a Scientific Advisor to Chordoma UK.

More to come soon on this exciting project.

How your donation is spent

There is little funding available for research into this relentless bone cancer mainly because it is relatively rare, occurring in only 1 in 800,000 of the population. Without a focused approach to raising money for research into chordoma, little will change quickly.
