Sarcomas are hugely challenging to diagnose, with over 100 different subtypes, and chordomas are no exception. Getting the right subtype diagnosis ensures that patients can receive a treatment most suitable for them. But a process this complex requires time, and importantly, specialist pathologists to make the correct diagnosis. But the number of pathologists available to provide this specialist expertise is set to decline. AI could bring faster diagnosis, more accurate prognosis, and quicker access to the right treatments.
The multidisciplinary team including pathologists, oncologists, bioinformatician and engineers hopes to improve how diagnoses are made and to predict more accurately the outcome for individual patients. They hope that this can be achieved by integrating the AI technology and model to clinical trials, genomic data and clinical outcome data so that the AI can learn which features associated with each tumour can be used to predict those patients that respond to specific therapies. This would allow selection of patients more likely to respond to specific therapies.
“An AI-based model will help reach a diagnosis more quickly, using fewer resources, expense, and staff time,” says lead investigator, Prof. Adrienne Flanagan. “If we could reduce diagnosis time by 10% minimum – and I think we could reduce it significantly more – the labs wouldn’t be so exhausted, pathologists would be able to think about making better diagnoses, and there would be more money to do all of this.”
A big thank you to Chordoma UK and all the patients and their families who have contributed to our research, as without their generous contribution in a difficult time we would not be able to undertake our research.

How your donation is spent
There is little funding available for research into this relentless bone cancer mainly because it is relatively rare, occurring in only 1 in 800,000 of the population. Without a focused approach to raising money for research into chordoma, little will change quickly.
