Honouring Alan: A Golf Day to Remember Our Hero

When we lose a member of our community, the impact resonates deeply across all of Chordoma UK. In 2024, we sadly said goodbye to Alan—a true chordoma warrior, hero, soulmate, dad, grandad, and friend whose courage, warmth, and resilience touched so many lives. Though Alan is no longer with us, his legacy continues to shine brightly through the determination of his family and especially his inspiring wife, Tina.

On the 4th of September 2026, family and friends gathered at Great Hadham Country Club in Hertfordshire for their second Golf Society Day held in Alan’s memory. Following last year's inaugural gathering, the family and friends decided this year to turn the occasion into a dedicated initiative to raise vital funds and awareness for Chordoma UK.

Despite chilly weather, 24 golfers braved the wind and rain for a fantastic day on the green. Family and friends all pulled together: Alan’s mate Cliff liaised with the club; daughters Amanda and Joanna set up QR codes for cashless donations; son and grandsons John, Joseph, and William decorated the venue with the Chordoma UK banner; son-in-law Simon coordinated players; and Alan’s wife, Tina, managed donations, trophies, and a grand raffle.

Generous raffle prizes donated—including Champneys meals, spirits, and golf vouchers—helped smash their initial £250 target to raise an incredible £857.00 (plus Gift Aid). To top it off, Alan’s son John Springett—a local singer—took the Chordoma UK charity bucket to a weekend pub performance and raised an additional £100.00 in cash donations! With these latest additions, Alan’s family is now well on their mission toward their ambitious goal of reaching £10,000 in total funds raised for Chordoma UK.

Tina remains an active, cherished member of the Chordoma UK family. Whenever she can, she joins our monthly virtual Chordoma Chat & Cheers gatherings, bringing her warmth, strength, and comforting support to fellow patients, carers, and loved ones.

The family plans to make this an annual event—most golfers are already asking for next year's date! Tina looks forward to keeping Chordoma UK updated and will warmly welcome any golfers from our community who wish to join in future years.

"On behalf of the Trustees of Chordoma UK and the entire chordoma community, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Tina and her incredible family. Their tenacity, teamwork, and tireless drive to keep raising funds in Alan's memory bring us closer every day to our ultimate goal: finding a cure."

How your donation is spent

There is little funding available for research into this relentless bone cancer mainly because it is relatively rare, occurring in only 1 in 800,000 of the population. Without a focused approach to raising money for research into chordoma, little will change quickly.
